Kissing Cousins

Two for the river.

There is a wide variety of trout species in our local fisheries. Here is a pair of exceptional examples, a couple beauty hybrid rainbow/cutthroat. Each showing a majority of respective species, but both showing the characteristics of each type. Besides various trout, mountain whitefish and the occasional grayling also swim in our waters.

Pulling Fly Line

There are certain things that veteran anglers do without thinking about it. Really cool tricks that over time simply become habit. Here is one of the little things that can make landing and releasing a fish a bit more streamlined.

Depending on the length of leader you are fishing, often times when landing a fish you end up with the fly line reeled clear up into the tip of the rod in order to get the fish close enough to hand or net. What comes next is a little pro maneuver that if you pay attention you will notice saves a bit of gong show antics. As soon as the fish is under control, pull a big long strip of line back off the reel so that there is enough slack to set the rod down or on the bank, under your arm, wherever. This additional slack in the line will allow you to unhook, & release the fish without the rod interfering in the transaction.

I’ve seen plenty of rods broken and flies sunk into fingers due to a rod “loaded” by a short amount of line and a flopping fish. It may take a few fish to get into the groove, but once you do I hope you will find the extra slack helpful.

Over The Hills & (not that) Far Away

Silver Creek Outfitters guide Greg Loomis and I took a little trip last week, for a “guides day off”. Many of the full time guides on the SCO staff work day, weeks, and even months on end, without taking much time to hold a bit of cork themselves. I had no trouble twisting Greg’s arm to get out on the water for some splash & giggles of our own.

Along the way I could not help but notice the sharp colors of almost florescent green as they turn yellow. And for those who take notice of details like these, we are seeing this transition take place weeks later than typical for years in recent memory. In fact, NOAA has published a report of la nina conditions that are parked just behind and in front of us again. Seems their forecasting models have been quite accurate over this past years offset seasons here in the N Rockies and Pacific North West. And guess what they are seeing for this upcoming 2011/12 winter and spring?

This push of summer conditions later into Oct are making for quite a decent extension of terrestrial fishing. Tricos and crane flies are still hanging around, the dry fly fishing is still full swing out there.

The Family That Fishes Together….

Long-time SCO guests Nick and Heidi Calley decided this would be the year to bring the whole family to the Sun Valley area for a little fly-flick’n. While daughters Taylor and Megan have only thrown the fly since yesterday, they didn’t blink twice at hopping right into the waters of Silver Creek, which I think is a stud maneuver.

Summary For The Day

Taylor with the family bragging rights for the day – nice rainbow!
Megan with the off-shoulder cast in the 25mph winds – the hook set will come, I promise.
Nick and Heidi, always a pleasure to spend the day with you and stick em’ good tomorrow on the Lost with Skooter and Brian.

See you down there tomorrow.
