"Evening Soft" Limited Edition Giclee Print

The greatest of scenic fly fishing paintings are breathtaking. Some however seem to stand alone in a distinctive light. Elements of the composition all fit into place so well, that they actually compell you to question if you have not actually stood there at some point in your own life. Certain paintings seem to quietly lean forward and whisper in your ear. Certain paintings come from the brush of Bob White.

"One Last Look-Rainbow Trout"

As described from BobWhite Studio,
“Bob White is an artist and author whose work expresses a misspent youth. Instead of doing his homework, his nose was constantly in the outdoor books and sporting magazines of the day. Consequently, he has wandered between Alaska and Patagonia for over two decades as an itinerant fishing guide, looking for gainful employment. He now paints and writes for a living; which is to say, he’s still searching.”

"Close to Home" A collaboration of Bob White and author John Gierach

It’s difficult to make your way through the contents of the “All About Bob” page without saying “Wow” over and over again. Time spent browsing all the works featured on his website will inspire many of us to not only appreciate the great craft, but pause in our own lives, and take a closer look at the painted world around us.

Talk about dream jobs, living the dream, fly fishing dreams, and so on. Tim Pask’s world is flat dreamy. As a world renowned photographer, angler, tackle developer, and great guy, Tim appears to have the world by tail.

“I have met most of my best friends while traveling the globe with a backpack full of camera gear. I can’t explain how it happens, but I seem to meet great people while traveling to beautiful places. So if you run into somebody you know in places like Rio Gallegos, Argentina and then Ulanbaataar, Mongolia in the same year, you just might have our affliction and I’ll tell you now that there is no cure, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.”

Backing, Brian O’Keefe

Ambassador. Innovator. Icon. A few words to describe the career of Brian O’Keefe and the impact his presence has had on the sport of fly fishing. From Pike to pineapples, ask him about nearly any fly fishing destination on the globe, and he’ll not only detail the fishing there, but even mention a few memories from the few years he guided there way back in the day. It seems as if Brian has stripped fly lines through as many exotic waters over the years as a dozen mortal anglers in their lifetimes. All while his rich words and captivating images have brought us with him along the way. And he’s just getting started.

At the highest levels, Brian represents the past, present, and future of fly fishing. From his frank representations of adventure fly fishing around the globe, to decades in the industry as a rep for nearly any brand you can think of, he’s a veteran founder of fly fishing community and culture. A natural story teller, his animated sense of humor and prankster personality have woven his name across generations of back-slapping stories among anyone in the business.

In the present he is still involved in developing the products we all use, from rods, reels and lines, to gear, clothing and flies. Companies who make these products come to him for input. For good reason, he’s won countless casting competitions and can still fire a 5wt laser-loop deep into the backing. And make it look easy.

Into the future, the world of fly fishing you are seeing now online has been greatly influenced by Brian and cohort Todd Moen in their creation of Catch Magazine. One of the first and arguably the best online magazine about fly fishing, Brian and Todd set the bar in the stratosphere with it’s release back in 2008, and somehow manage to bump it even higher with each new issue. Simply put, there is no finer collection of the worlds greatest fly fishing photographers and filmmakers than those assembled in Catch.

There's nothing "Extreme" about fly fishing, but O'Keefe is a founding father of that realm too. He has been on countless magazine covers, and not necessarily holding fish.

Like most of us, there is more to life than just fishing. From back flips to organic gardening, Brian is often wearing skis, scuba tanks or blaze orange & camo while chasing his bird dog Cooper through the hills of Oregon. Watch for his various presentations coming to fly shops and clubs near you, as his road show often tours the nation.

Don’t be surprised if the next big splash in how we see and catch fish with a fly is made by the creative enthusiasm and wide grin of Brian O’Keefe.

Backing, Shauna Stephenson

“Popular literature has suggested that all the world’s problems are caused by unhappy people, so to find happiness in oneself is really a gift to the world. And to their credit, there is no happier than the trout bum.”

Hard to argue with that, and Shauna Stephenson has a solid grip on perspectives that many of us share. Reinforcement to be a trout bum can not come often enough, thank you Shauna!

As a respected outdoor writer & journalist, photographer & fish bum herself, Shauna is the perfect fit for her position of Communications Director for the Sportsmen’s Conservation Project with Trout Unlimited. She works with 25+ campaigns across the West to spread the word of what groups are doing to benefit hunters and anglers by protecting fisheries and wildlife habitat.

Fly fishing brings broad gins and big smiles. It’s an activity, passion, hobby, sport, or whatever you want to call it that spans the interest of all gender and generation. Grandpa’s to grandkids, urban or rural, traditional to techy, the spectrum of people who have fallen in love with tricking fish is wide. All the people who love to fish find a voice a voice that they can relate to. Shauna represents a voice and perspective that is important in fly fishing as it’s rooted as such a male oriented culture. She creates art with words, skillfully captures emotion from behind a camera, and demonstrates heart in her love of the land. That is a voice we can all listen to.

The sport of fly fishing that we all love and share is dripping with art, passion, and inspiration. What that inspiration leads to is the media and artistic content that we devour  in person, in print, and now more commonly online. Via the lens, key-stroke, brush or pencil of a few, the rest of us can share and partake in the bond between anglers and the world that we fly fish.

We would like to acknowledge and salute those who inspire us with their work. Each individual is an artist of their own kind, and each has a unique perspective through which they view time spent on the water. As photographers, filmmakers, writers, and artists, these are the folks who are creating and defining fly fishing culture. What they create reflects who we are as a group, who they are as individuals, and what we love about fly fishing. Their work exposes that attraction to others in the community who may become drawn into fly fishing. Some of the names we will feature may be new to you, some may be well known legends.

Steelhead anglers are a unique breed. Who the hell could tolerate fishing for a “fish of a thousand casts”? Much less enjoy it? It’s hard to explain. However the images that Jeff Bright bring us can explain more than words I can think of. Beyond Jeff’s photographs, his writing also takes you along with him. You feel as if you are sitting next to him as his camera absorbs the incredible places and experiences he shares. Some may glance at images of brilliant steelhead momentarily stalled at an anglers feet and see only a fish. Others see those images and feel something much deeper than a fish at the shore. I’ve often wondered myself about steelheaders, “Does it take a certain breed or individual to become so passionate about the fish and places they live, or by exposure do the fish and their river create that passion in any person that allows it?”

In addition to incredible photography skills, Jeff Bright is a witty and talented writer with countless articles, features, books, and magazine articles to his credit. In an article titled “Songs From Sirens” Jeff describes his transition from gear to fly fishing for steelhead. “A couple of years and many fish later, I set aside conventional tackle and committed to fly fishing for steelhead — and instantly went from catching a lot to none. It was a strain on the ego, but thankfully I had books to keep me company and offer encouragement.”

You’ll be glad if you take a moment and visit his site. Actually, you’ll need a few days to get through all the fishy goodness. Seriously. Be warned however- you may be one of those who dabbles and experiments, tries swinging flies for steelhead “just one time” and ends up addicted and ruined for life. But never happier.
