The Crowd I Hang With – Silver Creek 2012

The first flakes of the season have officially hit the ground and with hesitation I am off to the sweet smell of P-tex and burning wax for the winter.

A huge thanks to everyone that made this year one for the books.  A few new faces this summer, but mostly people that I have fished with for many years and they have become more than someone who I take fishing – they have become real friends in my life.

Have a fantastic rest of the season (the BWO on the Creek right now are unbelievable!), a great winter, and see you down there next year.

What Can Brown Do For You?

The Silver Creek Browns have been delivering continuously over the past few weeks, with both size and numbers.  From the deeper troughs to the undercut banks to sipping dries in the shallow flats, the fishing could not be better.  The sudden heat wave has put the bugs in an inconsistent mode, but find the right place at the right time and it can be fantastic.

Tricos are starting to be heavier and thicker every day with both an emergence and a spinner fall, so take your pick.  Callibaetis continues to get stronger in the sloughs and Kilpatrick/Purdys ponds.  Damsels/Grasshoppers/Beetles and anything else crunchy are always safe bets for searching in the heat.

Stop by the shop and see Dave and the crew for any info, flies, free coffee, or whatever they can do for you.

See you down there tomorrow.

Silver Creek Update 7/3/12

Things are starting to heat up, including the temperatures down on the Creek.  Just one persons opinion on the fishing the past week.

Early Morning Fishing – Whatever that fluttering white moth looking thing is, there is a billion of them.  Prairie Caddis/Land Moth/White Sedge, there are a ton on the lower stretches, and get a stiff wind and the fish will eat them.  Baetis seems to be getting stronger and the usual Midge activity is always there and has been for the past month.  Still trying to get consistent hatches of bugs in the A.M. and even today reports from a couple of people of TRICOS!  Stay tuned.

Afternoon Fishing – Callibaetis is starting to be stronger in the ponds and slower moving areas with the PMDs’ a minor player, but still a few to be seen.  Starting to see signs of the weed pads sticking out of the water and the Damsel flies will not be far behind.  First day of the year I actually started to hear the HOPPERS whistling on the banks.

Hope your season has been good so far and see you down there tomorrow.

Next Stop – MONGOLIA!

With only about 36 hours left in the United States, my good friend Ben Gourlay is cramming as much of the Wood River Valley into his system as he can.  Luckily, a trip to Silver Creek made the list on Monday and he made the most of it.

Ben leaves Wednesday morning for a 27 month trip to Mongolia as a member of the Peace Corps, and where he ends up in the country is still a mystery, the thoughts of Taiman, Lenok, and Grayling will hopefully be apart of his adventure of a lifetime.

Thanks again for the day Ben, be safe, and Silver Creek will be awaiting your return.

SCO In The Northern CA Delta

Busted out of the Blaine County bubble to visit the family in Santa Cruz and was fortunate to book a day with Mike Costello.  He literally wrote the book on flyfishing in the California Delta, and again did not disappoint.  Always fun to throw 9wt rods with I-lines and sinks, a real departure from the lighter weight stuff we are familiar with around here.  Nice job Mike and hope to see you again real soon.

Also, any day that ends with a double-double from In-N-Out can’t be all bad.  Don’t order your fries “animal style”, makes them too soggy and I think my heart stopped twice on the ride home.

Only 20 days till the opener and will see you down there.
