SCO In The Northern CA Delta

Busted out of the Blaine County bubble to visit the family in Santa Cruz and was fortunate to book a day with Mike Costello.  He literally wrote the book on flyfishing in the California Delta, and again did not disappoint.  Always fun to throw 9wt rods with I-lines and sinks, a real departure from the lighter weight stuff we are familiar with around here.  Nice job Mike and hope to see you again real soon.

Also, any day that ends with a double-double from In-N-Out can’t be all bad.  Don’t order your fries “animal style”, makes them too soggy and I think my heart stopped twice on the ride home.

Only 20 days till the opener and will see you down there.

Say It Ain’t So….

Like a 10 year-old hillbilly being dragged away from the Mountain Dew factory, I am not going quietly from my 2011 guiding season. I love the winter, but the fishing season was, and still is, some of the best in years. Great water, healthy fish, bugs, and plenty of great people to spend the day with around the Wood River Valley.

On behalf of Silver Creek Outfitters, I personally want to thank everyone who made this past year one to remember. Don’t forget to see Dave and the crew for any info regarding winter fishing this year.

For me, if anyone is counting, only 201 days left till the summer opener, so book your trips early and have a great winter season.

Kokanee – Better Beer, Better Fish?

There are many signs that fall is coming. The geese are starting to head south – The elk are barking in the deep forests – Bryant Dunn has a beard that would easily get him into any ZZ Top cover band.

For me, it has always been the Kokanee. Land locked Sockeye salmon that are coming out of the reservoirs in our area. Mackay and Anderson Ranch are the best bets and the bigger fish always seem not far behind to hang and follow these spawners up in the shallows. While not the size of the Alaskan Sockeye, still a very cool sight to check out.

Stop in the shop and see Dave and the crew for any info, bugs, or a cup of coffee. Hope your summer has been good and see you down there tomorrow.

Silver Creek Update 08/24/2011

Glassy water – sporadic feeder in about 2 feet of water right below an over hanging bush. Long leader – small 3/4 spent baetis and one cast to not screw it up. Luckily my knots held and one chunk of a fish. Nice job to my good friend Cecil.

This week is supposed to be a lot warmer so during the heat of the day you need to be hunting those fish down. The hopper bite is on and there is some different dry-dry combos that have been working as well. Double down on different sized grasshoppers, hopper-beetle duos, or find your own combination of crunchy terrestrials.

Mornings are still about the same as the past week. Tricos – pseudos and baetis – callibaetis spinners and nymphing in the deeper slots. Still a great time to be down there and I’ll see you down there tomorrow.

Damsels In Distress

It’s not often that you can use a fly on Silver Creek that looks like a brooch your grandma would wear to Sunday church. The signs you should look for is fish flying out of the water near any exposed weed-bed. They attack them – they love them – and I hope you are getting some of that love. See you down there tomorrow.
