A Slow Start to Steelhead

This time last year the steelhead fishing was excellent, but this year the weather is cooler and the fishing has been slower. As with most steelhead reports it depends on who you talk too. The weather will warm up in early April and I expect the fishing to get much better. Below Salmon the water has been going up and down because of runoff and the conditions have not been that good. There are some fish in the upper river with many of these fish wintering in those stretches.

The main run of fish is still below Challis and they have been moving very slowly. Nymph fishing the runs is still your best bet. I like Prince nymphs and Stoneflies under a indicator as my favorite technique right now. You can swing flies as the water warms up. The best fishing has been in the afternoons once the water warms a couple of degrees. As the day time temperatures rise the fishing will be good early and late in the day.

Salmon River Fishing Report

Steelhead fishing is rapidly approaching. The weather has still been cold, but the days are getting longer and the fish are starting to move up the river. There are fish in the upper river between Yankee fork and Stanley, but most of these fish wintered over in the deeper holes in the area. The main group of fish is moving up through Salmon and is now in Challis and down river. The Lemhi has been putting mud and colored water into the main stem off and on for the past couple of weeks so the fish have not been pounded in the lower sections like they usually have. My favorite technique for the next couple of weeks is nymphing with flies like the Prince, stoneflies and egg patterns. I usually use 2 different flies and like to fish the deeper runs where the fish spend the days holding before moving. Swinging flies is also effective and patterns that I like are string leeches in black, blue and bright colors. Try to use weighted fly lines and get down to the fish. I will usually start at the head of the runs and work my way down through the whole run, even fishing the tail outs which are very good when the fish are moving. I expect the Clayton area above Challis will start to produce very good this next week. There were many fish in the run this Fall and the fishing should be excellent this Spring.

The Big Wood is open until the last day of March and midge fishing can be very good on cloudy overcast days. Use light tippets when fishing dries and emergers, and always have some light weighted flies for those fish feeding just under the surface.

The Big Lost is now open all year long. Please remember the rainbows will be spawning in certain areas in April, so stay away from the redds. You will see fish feeding on BWO and midges in the next couple of months. Patterns such as No Hackle’s, and Gulpher Specials in size 20 and 22 will work.  Don’t forget to bring nymph patterns including brassies and Rainbow Warriors in smaller sizes. The water level should remain low until late May.

Spring on the Big Wood

As I write this, a light snow is falling and the temperature is around 34 degrees. On many days like today, you can find some of the best fishing of the winter and early spring. Big Wood river rainbows will be found feeding on or near the surface, especially with very little sun. My favorite patterns are the Trailing Shuck Midge, Griffith’s Gnat, and even small parachutes for fish on the surface. I like carrying Brassies without beads and other light sinking nymphs in smaller sizes such as 18′s and 20′s. Use 6x tippets on these smaller flies. Before and after the hatches I will throw big nymphs in sizes 6 and 8, like rubber-leg stoneflies in black or brown. These patterns work well in the deeper pools and runs. Small tungsten flies are also must haves in sizes 16-20 and in different colors. I usually start at the tail-out of the runs on the Big Wood and work my way up with dries and nymphs. Take time to watch in the slower pieces of water.

The Big Lost and South Fork of the Boise are going to start fishing well. Expect to see midges and BWO’s in the next couple of weeks as the temperatures warm.
