Silver Creek is Starting to Pick Up!

Silver Creek is starting to pick up. Trico’s are starting to appear. This can be one of the most exciting times of the year and with this hatch comes a lot of pressure. Early in the hatch patterns in sizes 20-22 will work. You’ll want to carry both spinner patterns and adult patterns. My favorites are Harrop’s Henwing Spinners in all black and green and black which represents the female. I also like the ¾ spent Trico in a size 22 and a CDC Dun in sizes 20-24. Many times when a trico pod forms you can throw larger flies than what are present and have very good results. A Gulpher Special in a size 20-22 works for a bigger pattern. Baetis will also be out with Callibaetis hatches later mornings and into the afternoons and some larger PMD’s and a smaller Pmd look alike referred to as Psuedo Cloens in sizes 22-24. This is a small almost lime colored mayfly. Evenings can also be excellent this time of year. You will see PMD’s , Callibaetis and Baetis in the early evenings and sometimes the fishing is much better than the mornings.

The Big Wood, Copper Basin and other tributaries are fishing very well. The water is still high and wading should be done with extreme caution. You will want an assortment of dry flies including all sizes of Adams Parachutes, Pink Alberts, PMD’s and still some Green Drakes. I like caddis patterns at night. As the water lowers try using smaller patterns in the parachutes and Green Drakes. The best fishing has been late mornings and into the afternoons but as the temperatures rise the early to mid morning time period will become more important.

Big Wood, Warm Springs & The Copper Basin

I want to start this fishing report talking about the Big Wood, Warm Springs and the Copper Basin. The water is still very high on these streams but the fishing has started to get good on all of them. You must find the slower water including side channels and pools. And fly selection this time of year means big dry flies. You’ll see Green Drakes hatches in the early afternoons. This hatch will not last long so get out and search for the slower water. Some of my favorite flies are Adams Parachutes in sizes 12-16 and Stimulators in various colors. I like adding a nymph behind the dry before and after the hatch. Caddis are showing in the evenings along with smaller mayflies including some PMD’s. Both South and North of Ketchum are places you can try. Warm Springs is very clear and drops the quickest of our streams and is always a fun place to catch both hatchery and wild fish. The Copper Basin is a little behind our local waters and within the week will start to produce. The upper reaches clear first so stay high until the water comes down lower down on the East Fork and main stem.

Big Wood

Silver Creek has been tough. The next big hatch is Tricos and although a few have already shown the big numbers and pods will not happen for another week or two. I like small Baetis in the mornings along with some PMD”s in sizes 16-18 around. Damsel’s have started to show and always carry a few Parachute Damsels or Harrop’s Damsel to use on these aggressive feeders. Evenings and right into dark is also a good time to fish the Creek. I like Caddis and PMD patterns at night.

The South Fork of the Boise has dropped to a very good level. Drift boating is your best bet but as the water gets lower you can find fish walking and wading. Pink Alberts, Caddis and Stonflies and Salmon flies are your best bet at this time.

Silver Creek is Still Your Best Bet

Silver Creek is still the best bet until the water drops and clears on our other rivers. Hatches have been inconsistent but you can find some feeding fish. The best hatch is still the small Baetis. My favorite patterns are a ¾ Spent Baetis in a size 22 and a Harrop Hen Wing Spinner in a size 24. These flies are best fished with 6x and 7x tippets. When I’m fishing Silver Creek I like to use a standard 5x 9ft leader and add a 2ft to 3ft section of 6x or 7x tippet. I find I get a better drag free drift with the tippet added to the leader as compared to a 12ft leader tied directly to the fly. Most of your presentations should be downstream or across and down. If you have wind or it’s later in the evening you can use more upstream approaches to fishing.

One of my favorite times to fish is right before dark. I’ll use 5x or 4x and fish into the sunset with a little bigger fly. Pmd’s and caddis are your best hatches at night. The Green Drake is also out on the Nature Conservancy. A size 14 Cripple or Parachute will take fish. You will not see big hatches of this bug but it works very well early in the season. Beetles and Ants on windy days will also produce. A Crowe Beetle in sizes 8-12 is a great alternative to nymphing when there are no hatches present.

Copper Basin will start to fish in the next week or two. The water is still very high but if you can get up into the upper basin you will find some water to fish.

The South Fork of the Boise is flowing at 2,000 cfs and is picking up. You’ll need Salmonflies, Cicadas, Caddis and big rubber leg stonefly nymphs in your arsenal.
