Fall weather has arrived. Fishing is now best in the afternoons and with the cooler weather the hatches will improve. The main bug on all our rivers will be BWO’s in various sizes. I still like the small size 20-22 Hackle Stackers and Gulpher Specials but you also need some bigger patterns that represent the bigger fall Baetis/ BWOs.

Silver Creek has been hit and miss. I like the overcast cool weather but the wind can be a problem for some of the hatches including Baetis and Mahogany duns. When we had the nice sunny warm weather I liked the wind and was able to throw terrestrials on heavy tippets. I will still throw beetles for the next couple of weeks and a few hoppers but I really like the fall hatches with little or no wind. The Mahogony’s have been inconsistent but I expect them to be more important in the next few weeks. The timing of the hatches can be early afternoon but also late day around 3-5 pm so stay around it could pay off. Brown trout are getting very active. Please stay away from the redds and fish other spots which still have browns feeding for the winter. I like streamer patterns and nymphs this time of year.

The Big Wood river has been good and I expect to see lots of big Fall Baetis in the next couple of weeks. Zebra Midges fished off big indicator flies will produce and I like a few big patterns like Red Quills in my arsenal. This hatch has been very slow this fall and we could see some good numbers in the next few weeks.

The Big Lost below the Dam is fishing very good. Lots of BWO’s and midges are coming off and the nymphing is always good in this river. The wading has become easier as the flows have decreased and the fishing should be good for the rest of the Fall.
