Fishing Forecast June 3rd to June 10th‏

The image of giant mayflies backlit by a broad Western sunset is a sight that can never be forgotten. And when the audible rise of trout that may not be interested in surface feeding at any other time is added to the picture, you begin to understand the special summer event that Brown Drakes have come to represent.” ~ Rene Harrop

Fly Fishing Forecast June 3rd to June 10th.

The Brown Drakes have made their appearance for the year and are already on their way out. There is the possibility with the recent evening thunderstorms, that one more warm night this week will produce enough bugs to get the fish going. However, those following the Drakes with the fervor of a bunch of Deadheads have now set their sights on the Henry’s Fork where the Drakes typically hatch the latter half of June. For the next week or so, the best fishing remains on Silver Creek as most of our freestone rivers and tail-waters are at their season highs. Of course, Magic, Mackay, and the Little Wood reservoirs are ripe with chironomids and the fishing has been very good from a float tube or the bank.

SILVER CREEK
The crowds have finally dispersed with Memorial Day and the Drakes in the rear view mirror. While early June hatches can be sporadic, this is a great time to find some solitary moments on the Creek before the Trico madness gains momentum in July. Go with a good selection of PMDs, Baetis, and Callibaetis. Of course, it is never too early to start tossing ants and beetles during non hatch times. Also, be prepared to experiment with a variety of other techniques when there are no bugs about. The fish will be feeding most of the day this time of year on a variety of mayfly nymphs, scuds, damsel nymphs, and leeches. In the evening, caddis, along with mosquitoes, have been prolific and it is certainly worth fishing into the twilight as we are heading towards the longest day of the year.

THE BIG WOOD
The Wood remains high and muddy with flows just below 1200 CFS, the highest to date. It is going to be a few weeks before the Wood will be ready to go, just in time for the Green Drakes!

SOUTH FORK OF THE BOISE
The flows are now at 1600 CFS. This is a great flow for floating and while limited, wading/bank fishing is possible at certain pullouts. It is still early for the big stones, but the nymphs are active. Nymphing the riffles and runs is effective with Rubber Legged Stones, San Juan Worms, Caddis Larva, beaded PTs and Zebra Midge. There are some Caddis and Baetis fluttering about and if you do find surface feeders, they will be likely feeding on one of these bugs.

LOCAL PONDS
It is time to take the family to Lake Creek, Penny Lake, or Gaver’s Lagoon. All the ponds have been stocked and will receive regular stockings throughout the summer season. Whatever style of fishing you want to do, we are your headquarters. So drop on by before you take your family fishing and we will make sure you have the right gear to be successful.

SALMON RIVER
Flows are high here as well, but now is a good time to think about booking a drift boat trip for late June or early July. Once this river drops and clears, the fishing is phenomenal.

BIG LOST BELOW MACKAY
With flows at 580 CFS, this fishery is too dangerous to wade. Like last year, the flows will more than likely come down earlier than average and we should be able to enjoy some mid-summer fishing on the Lower Lost.

UPPER LOST- COPPER BASIN
The rain, along with what is left of the high altitude snows, have brought this part of the river up. It should drop quickly into the middle of June and the upper reaches will be fishable very soon.
