The Big Wood
May 24th, 2013 - March 31st, 2015
Rainbow Trout & Brown Trout
There is no better place for an angler to learn the art of fly fishing than the Wood. This Freestone fishery is what many veteran fly anglers would dream up, if left to design their own fisheries. With miles, upon miles of access, easy wading, nice sized, wild fish, and a beautiful backdrop, there is no better place to spend a hot summer day, or even a winter afternoon.
The Wood is forgiving enough to reward the beginner angler, who is willing to learn the basics with plenty of action.
Big dry flies are the norm on the Wood as well as decent catch rates. No where is an angler's catch rate translated so directly by their skills as it is on the Big Wood. The Wood is forgiving enough to reward the beginner angler, who is willing to learn the basics, with plenty of action, but this river also holds enough secrets to challenge the expert angler in anyone. The Big Wood is slowly becoming known as one of the most productive winter fisheries in the western United States, offering anglers dry fly action, as well as nymphing and streamer opportunities. The Wood is primarily a rainbow, cutt-bow fishery, with a healthy population of brown trout immediately above and below Magic Reservoir. There is no stocking on the main Big Wood River, so be ready for hard fighting, healthy trout!
