One Simple Guarantee

“I love fishing in the transitional seasons, when change is in the air, and the river.”

Aaron Tate is Idaho through and through. The Boise native is a sixth-generation Idahoan who, after attending college in Montana got started as a guide in Wyoming, and then Oregon. “But the pull back to Idaho has always been strong,” he said. “It’s good to be home.” Aaron’s grandfather was the co-creator of the Idaho Centennial Trail, stretching from the Nevada border in the south, to the Canadian border in the north. Aaron says, “Someday I plan on hiking the trail myself, with a fly rod of course.” His best guide trip to date?

“Early on in my rookie season of guiding in Wyoming, I took an 11-year-old kid who was fully obsessed with fly fishing. He returned to fish with me for the next three seasons, and each time, he was a better angler, and I was a better guide. It was so great to watch – and to help – someone fall in love with it as much as I am.”

Guide Style

Teacher

I like to talk to each guest about what they want to get out of the day and try and tune my guiding style to their specific needs. I generally like to teach, so that we can gain a better appreciation of the river, the sport, and all that surrounds it. That makes the catching even sweeter.

Fun Facts about Aaron

  • Aaron attended the University of Montana and graduated with a degree in Geography. He focused his studies on water policy, completing his senior thesis on dam removal on western rivers.
  • He recently returned from a DIY fly fishing trip through the South Pacific, fishing Christmas Island and New Zealand. He spent a week alone in the backcountry of New Zealand’s South Island, chasing the brown trout of his dreams.
  • Aaron’s first fishing memory? “Catching little cutthroats on a fly behind a bubble, way up in the high mountain lakes of Central Idaho. It has been a steadily fueled addiction ever since.”
  • After a day on the water, Aaron loves to pop open a cold beer on the tailgate, appreciate a beautiful Idaho landscape, and drive home through the mountains, windows down, and great music up.
  • Aaron is a fan of baetis hatches. “They are often the first mayfly to hatch in the spring, and one of the last to hatch in the fall. I love fishing in the transitional seasons when change is in the air and the river. That being said, I also always love to throw a variety of large, meaty, articulated streamers.”
  • When he’s not fishing (which is most of the time), Aaron enjoys all outdoor activities. He is an avid skier, hunter, whitewater rafter, and loves backpacking and camping in the many remote parts of the state.
  • He loves to cook Italian cuisine; thanks to a class he took while studying abroad in Italy.

Aaron was excellent. There were 3 of us and he did a good job of spending enough time with each of us. His tips on casting will stick with us forever. We will definitely ask for him again in a future outing.
