ON LEADING PEOPLE TO THE FISH

“I love that there is always something to learn.”

Anthony Mauldin’s route to Idaho was not the most direct. “My wife and I had been living in Singapore where I was teaching at an international school when we had our first child,” he explains. “Being on the other side of the world away from family was not easy so we made the decision to move back to the U.S.  When looking for a place to raise our kiddo and settle down, the Wood River Valley kept calling. We moved here sight unseen and I really knew one thing … the access to fishing was next level and clearly better than chasing peacock bass and snakeheads in Singapore!” His love of local waters translates into his enthusiasm for guiding. His best guide trip to date? “Getting to take my brother-in-law out on the water. Before the trip, he had never fly fished a day in his life, but he was filled with questions, wanting to know, quite literally … everything.

His inquisitive nature, desire to learn more, and figure out the finer details from tying knots to reading water made me incredibly excited to share my passion. I can still remember being at the first pocket of water. He puts a decent enough drift in the zone and BANG on a fish! We still reminisce about this. The smile on his face from the first fish he ever caught was priceless.”

Guiding Style

Teacher. “I enjoy getting to walk people through the ins and outs of the sport and introducing them to the challenges that keep me coming back for more. Fly fishing can be considered a ‘snobbish’ sport (I mean we call bobbers strike indicators!) but it is a pursuit where you can always be a student of the craft. I love that there is always something to learn.”
