Casting Instructor

Mateo De Wilde came to Idaho via circuitous route. Born into a fishing family and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, his first fishing memory is unique to this part of the world! “I caught my first fish, humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, which is the state fish of Hawaii, with my dad when I was three years old,” he explains.

He’ll be happy to help you with the proper pronunciation of that particular species on your ride to the river! Mateo loved growing up with the ocean as his backyard but was lured to Idaho for the great fishing and laid-back mountain lifestyle.

Guiding Style

“I would consider myself a catcher, but I want to teach people the skills that they need to successfully fish on their own throughout the day.”

Fun Facts about Mateo

  • He recently earned his degree in Geology at Whitman College.
  • Mateo is a great DJ and can breakdance.
  • Another hidden skill? “I love to get creative in the kitchen and cook a great meal at home while listening to music.”
  • His favorite guide trip, to date, was introducing a young angler to the joy of the sport when, on a pond, they pulled a fish in that was as big as the client!
  • Mateo’s favorite fly patterns? It’s a toss-up between the olive jigged streamer, “because they’re fun to tie and fish well in deep water” and the skwala “because they bring up big fish at the end of winter.”
  • As a Hawaii native, when he’s back in the islands Mateo enjoys spearfishing and free diving.
